Abstract:

These data provide a record of ice extent, type and concentration from 1955 to the present. Data sets include: ice charts from 1973 to present; Great Lakes Ice concentration data base from 1960 to 1979; daily ice observations from 1955 to present; and aerial photos from 1963 to 1973.

Ice charts are available for the Great Lakes and connecting waterways (except Lake Ontario); ice charts date from 1973 to the present. The charts are produced three times weekly from satellite imagery, using surface observations when available. The data set is updated each mid-summer.

The Great Lakes Ice Concentration Data Base shows ice concentration in five sections, one for each Great Lake; data are available from 1960 to 1979. The data base is coded to the nearest 10 percent for each 5- by 5-km grid square. The data base has not been updated since 1979.

The daily ice observations are provided for all Great Lakes and connecting waterways from 1955 to the present. Observations are taken from shore locations, and are available by site (an average 34 sites per year) or area. A site location list is provided upon request.

The aerial photos show areas of historical ice cover impact on navigation and hydroelectric operations; they are available in black-and-white (some color) and thermal infrared serial photos, 9- by 9-inch; they span the years 1963 through 1973.
