Technology Description:

Clor-N-Soil is a self-contained portable test kit for analyzing soil for the presence of PCBs or other chlorinated organics. It provides a semi-quantitative result at 50 ppm PCB, revealing if the sample contains more or less than that amount. Clor-N-Soil is a colorimetric test that can be performed in the field with little or no training. No instrumentation is required and results are available in about 8 minutes. The test kit consists of two polyethylene tubes, each containing two glass ampules which in turn contain the reagents that comprise the test. Also included is a hand-held balance for weighing the soil sample, a weighing tube, a vial of extraction solvent and a filter for removing water and debris from the solvent after extraction. Clor-N-Soil sells between $10 and $15 per test, depending on quantity.

Clor-N-Soil is the only test for PCBs in soil that requires no instrumentation and can be completed in less than 10 minutes.

PCBs are extracted from 10 grams of soil using a proprietary solvent. This solvent is then reacted with a sodium reagent which removes chlorine atoms from any PCBs that are present. The resulting chloride ions are then extracted into an aqueous phase where they are allowed to react with a fixed amount of mercuric nitrate. An indicator ampule is broken and if a violet color develops, the sample contains less than 50 ppm PCB.
Performance Status/
Limitations:

Performance Status:

Clor-N-Soil has been successfully at thousands of sites around the world since its introduction in 1988. It has been received draft method approval status from the EPA and is recognized by other regulatory authorities as well. It is available from stock in quantities as low as six tests ($15 per test).

          Limitations:

Clor-N-Soil is semi-quantitative and simply provides a go, no-go result at 50 ppm. It detects all sources of organic chlorine, not just PCB. As a result, the test may give a false positive result if chlorinated solvents are present in sufficient quantities when testing exclusively for PCBs.
