Technology Description:

Envirol, Inc. has developed a portable, quantitative field test system for pentachlorophenol (PCP) in soil. The Quick Test for PCP uses an innovative photochemical reaction which produces color proportional to the concentration of PCP. The single measurement system consists of the Envirometer instrument, a volumetric pipettor, a small balance, and test kits (sold separately). Each test kit contains pre-measured solvents and other consumables for analysis of 5 soil samples. The method entails the extraction of the analyte (PCP) from soil using methanol and employs a combination of solid phase extraction and acid-base cleanup techniques to separate PCP. The PCP and Quick Test Reagent are then combined (in solution) and placed in the Envirometer. The Envirometer automatically reacts, measures and displays the PCP concentrations.
Performance Status/
Limitations:

Performance Status:

The Quick Test for PCP has been successfully used at hazardous waste sites in Montana, Oregon, and Texas and is available as of June, 1996. The Quick Test for PCP has been submitted to the U.S. EPA for evaluation and assignment of a method number.

          Limitations:

The use of the Quick Test for PCP is limited to determination of PCP in soil and water. The presence of tri- and tetrachlorophenols can result in positive interference. Mono- and dichlophenols must be present at relatively high concentrations to be detected. The Quick Test for PCP is not intended for use with other contaminants.
