Xontech has developed a sector sampler, Model 911A, which relies on the wind direction sensor collection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The wind sensor directs whole air, sampled at a constant rate, into either an 'In' Sector or an 'Out' Sector canister. When the wind comes from the suspected emissions area, the sample is routed into the In Sector canister, otherwise the sample is collected in the Out Sector canister. This method is analogous to 'upwind/downwind' sampling but does not require two distinct sites or manual sampler control.
The sampler is portable, and can be battery or AC powered. The air samples are analyzed by gas chromatograph (USEPA TO-14 Method) for VOCs. Utilizing sector samplers the resulting data allows the differentiation of VOCs having originated from the source from that of other sources in the vicinity.

The sector sampler has been used to collect air samples before and after the start-up of a bioremediation waste site, at land fills, and at industrial emissions sites.
Limitations:
One limitation of the Model 911A Sector Sampler is the condensation of water in the sampler. Although the majority of the water vapor is removed by the pump which pressurizes the canister with the air sample at 25 PSI, some moisture does get into the sampler. Condensation of the moisture in the sampler can be avoided by heating the sampler box.
