Technology Description:

Ohmicron's proprietary technologies are based on enzyme-linked immunoassays which quickly and accurately detect and quantify very small amounts of contaminants in complex and varied samples. Results are available in minutes or hours instead of days or weeks, don't require expensive equipment, can be used almost anywhere, and are significantly less costly than traditional test methods.

Ohmicron currently manufactures and markets the following immunoassay kits -
Atrazine, Aldicarb, Alachlor, Cyanazine, Carbofuran, Metolachlor, Captan, 2,4-D, Procymidone, Benomyl/Carbendazim, Carbaryl, Pentachlorophenol, Chlorothalonil, PCBs, HS Atrazine, Paraquat, Total BTEX (TPH), Triclopyr, TNT, Methomyl, PAHs, caPAHs, Trichloropyridinol, Silvex, Cyclodienes, Chlorpyrifos.

Immunoassays are analytic procedures based on the specific binding of antibodies to target molecules. Antibodies are proteins produced by the immune system in animals to defend against foreign substances. They have specific binding sites which react with only one antigen or contaminant. Developing just the right antibody that binds only with the chemical being tested makes these methods highly selective. When these antibodies are combined with other test components, they permit detection of very low levels of contaminants, speeding remediation and providing accurate monitoring.

Ohmicron's RaPID Assay products use a magnetic particle delivery technology for which Ohmicron holds an exclusive license for environmental contaminants. Attaching antibodies to microscopically small magnetic particles instead of test tubes speeds up the chemical reaction between the antibody and the contaminants and provides more precise result than earlier immunoassay technology. In competitive systems, antibodies are typically coated on plastic test tubes or trays. Because of variability in manufacturing, the number of antibodies may not be consistent from test to test. Linking antibodies to microscopically small magnetic particles assures the number of antibodies doesn't vary from test to test and speeds up the reaction between the antibody and the contaminant. Ohmicron's test are fast, accurate and easy to use, helping companies better manage environmental program and comply with government regulations. They can be used either in the laboratory or on-site, which often means considerable time and cost savings to customers.

Limitations:

Performance Status:

Ohmicron's RaPID Assays have been validated by the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Office of Solid Waste. Government agencies such as the EPA, the Department of Defense (DOD), the Department of Energy (DOE) together with environmental engineering firms such as Camp Dresser and McKee, International Technology Corporation and ENSR Consulting and Engineering use Ohmicron's test systems. The company also has approvals from State EPAs, DOD, and the DOE. Ohmicron RaPID Assay methods have been certified by the State of California for both water and soil samples.

Technical support is available directly from Ohmicron, including on-site training and telephone and on-site follow-up. A recent independent study cited Ohmicron as having the highest level of customer satisfaction.

          Limitations:

The RaPID Assay kits will detect the selected contaminant and related compounds to different degrees. Specificity tables included in the package insert provide data on several related compounds. The RaPID Assay kit provides screening results. As with any analytical technique (GC, HPLC, etc.) positive results requiring some action should be confirmed by an alternative method.

A control solution is provided with each RaPID Assay kit. It is recommended that it be included in every run and treated in the same manner as unknown samples. Acceptable limits should be established by each user.

The resistance to potential interferences vary from analyte and is characterized in the package insert for each method. Commonly it is recommended that water samples containing gross particulate matter be filtered to remove particles and those that have been preserved with acids be neutralized with a strong bases. Commonly encountered soil interferences include oils and tolerated levels are provided in the individual package inserts. These interferences are diminished in direct proportion to the dilution made of the soil extract. Consequently, the level of interference is generally dependent on the detection level required as well as the analyte being tested.
