Technology Description:

ECO LOGIC is the North American distributor of the Austrian manufactured V&F Airsense 500 Real Time Mass Spectrometer. The instrument uses a patented ion transfer technique and low energy chemical ionization to minimize or eliminate fragmentation of sample molecules and produce single ion products for ease of analysis.

          The low energy or chemical ionization is based on the interaction of neutral molecules (sample gas) with a low energy ion beam (source gas). Generally sample gas molecules with an ionization potential (eV) equal to or lower than the incoming ion beam will be ionized. A series of source gases, each carrying a specific ionization electron voltage potential, is available to the instrument operator. The selection is based on the compounds of interest and the energy level that will ionize the compounds without fragmentation.

          This mobile, single quadrupole mass spectrometer, has been ruggedized for operation in the field to continuously monitor gaseous trace organics directly from process gas streams and ambient air.
Performance Status/
Limitations:

There are over 150 units worldwide being utilized in a variety of applications, ranging from air/fuel ratio studies in engines which require millisecond response to long term incinerator emission studies which may require several weeks of monitoring for process optimization.

          The Airsense 500 operates with a series of low energy ionization gases each carrying a particular energy level. Compounds of similar masses can be separated based on their ionization and the selection of the appropriate ionization energy level. Compounds are identified based on atomic mass; therefore identical mass compounds that carry similar ionization potentials may not be separated easily.

          Subsequently, the high speed, single quadrupole analysis technique limits the capability of distinguishing between certain isomers of compounds and typically provides a total isomer analysis.
