Technology Description:

The Heath DETECTO PAK OVD is a portable flame-ionization detector utilized for detecting volatile organic compounds. The DETECTO PAK OVD uses a 40% hydrogen/60% nitrogen fuel source for the flame in the ionization chamber. A positive draw intake pump within the instrument draws a sample into the chamber. Any VOC in the flame and combustion process releases ions from the carbon atoms in the VOC molecule. The released ions are attracted to a positively charged plate. These collected ions establish an electric current that is stabilized and transmitted to an analog meter.

The meter responds to the VOC quantity in the sample, from 0.2 ppm to 14K ppm. The amount of VOC in the sample is directly related to the ions collected and hence the meter reading indicates the quantity of VOC in the sample.

The unit has five sensitivity ranges (10, 50, 100, 1000, and 10K ppm) that allow the user to identify the quantities detected. The instrument is rated intrinsically safe by ETL Testing Laboratories for use in Hazardous Locations - Class 1, Division 1, Groups A, B, C, and D.
Performance Status/
Limitations:

Performance Status:

Flame ionization detectors have been a proven VOC detection technology for many years. Heath has manufactured FID instrumentation for over 30 years and only recently developed the DETECTO PAK OVD as an intrinsically safe unit.

The wide range of detection limits (0.2 ppm to 14K ppm) in one instrument, the reliability of the battery, and ease of calibration have been particularly beneficial to the wide range of companies utilizing this instrument.

          Limitations:

The DETECTO PAK OVD is a total hydrocarbon counter and is not capable of identifying specific compounds. A ten - to - one dilutor built into the sampling block of the unit allows the operator to detect VOCs in excess of 14K ppm. However, the diluted readings should be used to show relative increase / decrease rather than actual VOC concentrations.

"Sticky" contaminants or liquids drawn through the sampling system may render the unit inoperable.

In attempting to identify quantities of a specific VOC, the unit should be calibrated with that specific VOC. The unit can also be calibrated to methane and an appropriate response factor applied to the meter reading.
