Abstract:

The Emergency Response Notification System (ERNS) is used to store information on notifications of oil discharges and hazardous substances releases. The ERNS database contains information on release notifications of oil and hazardous substances that have occurred throughout the United States and have been reported to the National Response Center (NRC) and the ten EPA Regions. Since its inception in 1986, more than 350,000 release notifications have been entered into ERNS. The database contains many types of information including: discharger information; date of release; material released; cause of release.

There are several ways to access the data:

          1. ERNS data can be downloaded at no charge from the ERNS Internet web site using a standard web browser. Users can select a specific EPA region to see what ERNS data are available for that region. For each region, those ERNS data files available for downloading are listed by year. The data files have been converted to a flat file and compressed.

Users can request a custom search of ERNS by filling out and submitting an online form. There may be a charge for some of the search costs depending on the classification of the user's organization.

          2. ERNS is accessible through the RTK-NET World Wide Web site.

          3. ERNS data files can be accessed through the EPA gopher or through anonymous FTP.
