Technology Description:

PCP, Inc. manufactures and sells the Phemto-Chem(R) Model 110 Ion Mobility Spectrometer (IMS). This readily portable instrument operates with atmospheric pressure air and detects and identifies many compounds at concentrations down to part per billion levels and less. The sensor utilizes atmospheric pressure ionization and ion molecule reactions to electrically charge many pollutant species. All of the ions thus formed move down the reaction region of the IMS under the influence of the voltage gradient until the electronic shutter grid is encountered. This grid is repetitively opened at brief intervals, admitting pulses of mixed ions into the ion drift region of the IMS. As they drift, the ions in any particular pulse separate into their individual chemical species based upon their differing intrinsic mobilities. The arrival of the individual ion pulses at the collector electrode produces a characteristic ion arrival time spectrum. A typical analysis time is on the order of 20 milliseconds, which provides the real-time monitoring capability of the technique. Since the shutter grid is repetitively pulsed, a continuous spectrum can be directly viewed or summed for enhanced signal-to-noise ratio.

The Phemto-Chem(R) Model 110 is provided with a portable recirculating gas supply (RGS) and operates from a 12-volt battery (a 115V, 60Hz power source is an optional accessory). The data is collected with a portable computer. A suitcase-type two-wheel luggage carrier provides site mobility.

The sensor provides low threshold response to most volatile organics with species characterization for both monitoring and measurement of the species.

A typical application of this technology is detection of trace levels of contaminants in air.
Performance Status/
Limitations:

Performance Status:

The ion mobility spectrometer (IMS) technology is relatively new as an analytical chemistry tool in hazardous waste site applications. This technology is well-known in the laboratory and in specialty niche application of contraband drugs, chemical agents and explosive material detection because of its portability and because of its low threshold sensitivity. Industrial pollutant monitoring applications also are well-demonstrated. Industrial applications include environmental monitoring for toxic air pollutants in the industrial production area of an organic chemical manufacturing plant and for quality control analyses in semi-conductor device manufacture.

          Limitations:

The ion mobility spectrometer (IMS) requires that the targeted compounds form ions in the sensor region. This occurs normally for organic compounds which contain halogens, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorous and other hetero-moieties. Typical air pollutants that can be identified and quantified with the Phemto- Chem(R) IMS include nitrous oxide, sulfur oxides, and photochemical oxidants. IMS is not responsive to carbon monoxide and simple hydrocarbons. Targeted organics which are dominant in mixtures can be measured by direct inhalation, or direct examination, normally without preparation or dilution. Complex mixtures of normally responsive chemicals may require some simple rapid separation such as programmed thermal evaporation, which is available from a short gas chromatograph to column configuration.
