HydroClor Q4000 is a portable, disposable test kit to analyze water, waste water, and oil/water mixtures for the presence of chlorinated organic compounds. It takes less than ten minutes to run, requires no instrumentation or electricity, and can be done directly on site. HydroClor provides quantitative results over the range of 100 to 4000 ppm and is not sensitive to inorganic chloride. It costs less than $13/test and requires no capital investment.

          Chlorinated organics are extracted out of the water using a micro solvent extraction. The extractant is reacted with a sodium reagent that strips chloride atoms from any chlorinated organics. The resulting chloride ions are titrated with mercuric nitrate in the presence of a colorimetric indicator. When the indicator changes color, the titration is stopped and the result (ppm Cl) is read off the side of the syringe.

          HydroClor Q4000 has been available since 1989 and is used worldwide to quickly analyze samples for total organic chloride. It has been submitted to EPA's Office of Solid Waste for approval as an SW-846 method. It is similar to the Clor-D-Tect Q4000 kit which is used to analyze used oil for the presence of chlorinated compounds.

          Limitations:

          HydroClor Q4000 is a disposable test kit that works over the range of 100 to 4000 ppm. Its precision is +/- 100 ppm and the limit of detection (100 ppm) may not be low enough for some applications.
