Technology Description:

Steam injection-soil vapor extraction (SI-SVE) has been demonstrated at a number of sites. The process enhances the extraction of organics which are tough to remove from soil and groundwater by volatilizing them with hot steam. The benefits of SI-SVE include better purification of soils and groundwater, and greater ability to externally monitor the progress of the extraction effort (e.g., with thermal tomography). Thermal tomography, electric resistance tomography, seismic tomography, induction tomography, passive seismic monitoring, and conventional geophysical well logging can all be used to monitor the steam movement through the soil. These techniques are described in the scientific literature. The principal drawback is the energy requirements for creating the steam for injection.

The treatable soil types can be divided into (a) low permeability sediments; (b) moderate permeability sediments; and (c) high permeability sediments. The higher permeable sediments have showed the best performance. SI-SVE works best on halogenated volatiles and nonhalogenated volatiles. The process has demonstrated effectiveness (depending on compound) on nonhalogenated semivolatiles and halogenated semivolatiles.

Thermatrix (TMX) has designed an improvement to the SI-SVE process that can result in substantial energy savings. A combined TMX/SI-SVE system utilizes a vapor extraction blower, Thermatrix Flameless Oxidizer, waste heat boiler and an optional acid-gas scrubber (if chlorinated contaminants are present). The main benefit of the combined process is the ability to utilize the heat of oxidation of the contaminants in generating the steam for injection.
Performance Status/
Limitations:

Performance Status:

Thermatrix has supplied flameless oxidation units to the chemical, pharmaceutical and oil refining industries. A number of these applications have involved chlorinated hydrocarbons, where corrosion resistant materials and treatment of acid gas by-products are provided with the system.

Thermatrix systems have been permitted by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) in 45 days and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and Energy (NJDEPE) in 30 days. Additional units have been supplied and permitted in Texas, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, and other states. Contact the company for the latest information on remediation applications and studies, on-site demonstrations and installations, operating histories, client references, test results and permitting data.

          Limitations:

There are no major technical limitations to the use of this technology for soil and groundwater remediation of organic and chlorinated compounds. However, it does not work effectively on organic metals, inorganic metals, radioactive materials or asbestos. Typically, a knockout pot with demister may be provided for the fume line before the flameless oxidizer to remove entrained liquids.
