The United States Geological Survey (USGS) is a bureau of the Department of the Interior (DOI). The Survey provides for the classification of public lands and the examination of the geological structure, mineral resources, and products of the national domain, and is authorized to maintain an archive of land-remote sensing data for historical, scientific, and technical purposes.
The USGS provides the Nation with reliable, impartial information to describe and understand the Earth. This information is used to: minimize loss of life and property from natural disasters; manage water, biological, energy, and mineral resources; enhance and protect the quality of life; and contribute to wise economic and physical development.
The primary responsibilities of the USGS are: investigating and assessing the Nation's land, water, energy, and mineral resources; conducting research on global change; and investigating natural hazards such as earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, floods, and droughts. The USGS prepares maps and digital and cartographic data; collects and interprets data on energy and mineral resources; conducts nationwide assessments of the quality, quantity, and use of the Nation's water resources; and publishes thousands of new maps and reports each year.
