Abstract: | |
The Office of Radiation and Indoor Air (ORIA) is part of the US EPA Office of Air and Radiation. The goal of ORIA is to protect the public and the environment from exposures to radiation and indoor air pollutants. The Office develops protection criteria, standards, and policies; works with other programs within EPA and other agencies to control radiation and indoor air pollution exposures; provides technical assistance to states through EPA's regional offices, and to other agencies having radiation and indoor air protection programs; directs an environmental radiation monitoring program; responds to radiological emergencies; and evaluates and assesses the overall risk and impact of radiation and indoor air pollution. The Office disseminates information and works with state and local governments, industry and professional groups, and citizens to promote actions to reduce exposures to harmful levels of radiation and indoor air pollutants, including radon. Two main divisions within ORIA are:
Radiation Protection Division - Coordinates EPA's activities which protect the public health and environment from the effects of ionizing radiation. The Division accomplishes this goal by developing standards/guidance/criteria to: protect the public and the environment from radiation exposure; clean up radioactively contaminated sites; identify and evaluate new radiation sources to determine any public health significance; and participate in Federal radiological emergency preparedness and response activities.
Indoor Environments Division - Coordinates research and develops and implements policies regarding the impact of indoor air pollutants on the general public. The main objectives of the Division are to: establish EPA policy by carrying out risk management studies of available data on exposure and health risks associated with indoor air pollution; implement a plan that reduces present levels of exposure; work with other programs within EPA and with other agencies to minimize risks associated with exposure to indoor contaminants; and educate the public about indoor air pollution and its associated health risks.
ORIA also manages two laboratories.
National Air and Radiation Environmental Laboratory - Provides analytical support to EPA's surveys of radon concentrations in homes, schools, and other public buildings across the United States.
Radiation and Indoor Environments National Laboratory - Provides technical support for numerous radiation protection and control activities, including site investigations, radon assessments and evaluations, health assessment modeling, and indoor air studies. The Laboratory also maintains an emergency response capability for radiation accidents.
