The Institute of Environmental Sciences, founded in 1953 as a not-for-profit association, is a professional society of engineers, scientists, and educators from industry, government, and academic institutions.
The general purposes of the Institute are:
- To promote and encourage the acquisition of knowledge pertaining to environmental sciences, environmental engineering, and related areas of interest for industry, science, and government,
- To develop environmental design and test criteria,
- To promote the basic science and technology of contamination control,
- To sponsor or encourage courses or curricula in the environmental sciences in the institutions of higher education,
- To encourage or recognize outstanding achievement in the environmental sciences, environmental engineering, and related fields of interest.
