Abstract:

The Technology Administration serves as the premier technology agency working with U.S. industry in addressing competitiveness, and in exercising leadership within the Department of Commerce.

          The Administration:
        • Chairs an inter-agency state-federal working group whose efforts include working together on such issues ranging from removing regulatory barriers to the adoption of new technologies in such areas as telemedicine, environmental technologies, and the building and construction industries, to developing an Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Technology (EPSCoT) in rural and other states that traditionally receive less Federal research funding.
        • Chairs the Committee on Technological Innovation, part of the President's National Science and Technology Council (NSTC). This committee links industry's needs and government technology efforts in electronics, manufacturing, materials, environmental technologies, and building and construction.
        • Oversees the Commerce Science and Technology Fellowship (ComSci) Program, which provides senior-level executive branch employees with an opportunity to study national and international issues relating to the development, application, and management of science and technology.

          The Administration manages three agencies:

Office of Technology Policy (OTP) - The OTP is the only office in the federal government with the explicit mission of developing and advocating national policies that use technology to build America's economic strength.

National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) - The NIST promotes economic growth by working with industry to develop and apply technology, measurements, and standards.

National Technical Information Service (NTIS) - The NTIS collects and disseminates scientific, technical, engineering and related business information produced by the U.S. government and foreign sources. NTIS's multimedia products range from paper copy technical reports and periodicals to CD-ROMs, audiovisual products, computer software, electronic databases (NTIS bibliographic database), and online services (FedWorld).
