The Mapping Applications Center (MAC) is the U.S. Government's leading civilian organization devoted to developing maps and geospatial data based on high altitude photographs, earth orbiting satellite images, and other technologically advanced and non-conventional sources. The MAC applies state of the art and experimental cartographic methods to compile and publish conventional and digital maps, digital images, and other cartographic information and tools. The Center also demonstrates and prototypes applications of geographic information systems (GIS) to problems of regional and national significance, such as ecosystem management and tracking of global change.
The Mapping Applications Center operates two Earth Science Information Centers (ESICs), one located in Reston, VA and the other located in Washington, D.C. USGS products are available through the ESICs.
