Abstract:

The 1992 National Resources Inventory (NRI) is a "snapshot" of resource conditions in the United States as of the 1992 growing season. It is one of a series of inventories conducted at 5-year intervals by the U. S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). The NRI is a comprehensive database on natural resources on the non-federal lands of the United States (74 percent of the nation's land area).

          The database includes data from three years--1982, 1987, and 1992, with the focus on soil, water, and related resources on our nation's farms and non-federal forests and grazing lands. In addition, the NRI is linked to NRCS's extensive Soil Interpretations Records database to provide additional soils information. Data from other sources can be integrated with the NRI through spatial linkages in a Geographic Information System.

          Some of the data elements within the NRI database include:
          Farmstead, urban, and built-up areas;
          Type of land ownership;
          Soil classification, soil properties, and soil interpretations such as prime farmland;
          Land cover/use--cropland, pasture land, rangeland, forest land, barren land, rural land, urban and built-up areas;
          Irrigation--type and source of water;
          Erosion data--wind and water;
          Wetlands--classification of wetlands and deep-water habitats in the U. S. (1982 and 1992 only);
          Conservation practices and treatment needed;
          Rangeland condition, apparent trend of condition.
          Streams and water bodies by kind and size;
          Type of earth cover--crop, tree, shrub, grass-herbaceous, barren, artificial, water;
          Forest type group;
          Wildlife habitat diversity.

          How To Access The Data

          The NRI database is available to the public for purchase on four CD-ROMs (ISO 9660 format) through the Web site listed below. Each disk contains data for a collection of states that form a contiguous region. All files are in flat ASCII format.
