Technology Description:

The device is a portable gas chromatograph using flame ionization detection (FID). It is carried via a shoulder strap and samples through a probe and sample loop with septum option. It is certified as intrinsically safe (when used with Duracell Alkaline batteries), and weighs under 10 lbs with either size of available hydrogen bottle.

          FID's measure the concentration of airborne hydrocarbons by measurement of the ions produced when the air sample is routed through a hydrogen flame. Use of separation columns allows users to distinguish the components of a hydrocarbon mixture (e.g., detect benzene in the presence of gasoline). The device will operate approximately 40 hours on alkaline batteries or 16 hours on rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries and 12 hours on the small H2 bottle or 18 hours on the large bottle. The device can monitor for total hydrocarbons on a continuous basis (within time constraints above) or intermittently in the GC mode.

          Measuring ranges are selectable at 0 to 100 ppm, 0 to 1000 ppm and 0 to 10,000 ppm as methane.

          FID's have been used widely to detect leaks of gaseous fuels such as LP gas and natural gas. They are acceptable for EPA Method 21 VOC monitoring.

          Limitations:

          The column operates at ambient temperature limiting the detection to normally volatile compounds. The hydrogen flame must be adjusted for high altitude applications.
