EPA's Office of Air and Radiation (OAR) oversees the air activities of the EPA. Air activities include development of national programs, technical policies, and regulations for air pollution control. The Office also oversees the development of national standards for air quality, as well as emission standards for new stationary sources and hazardous pollutants. The mission of OAR is to be the leader in the U.S. and the world in protecting human health and the environment by preventing air pollution and exposure to radiation through effective management of public and private resources. OAR will support and encourage innovative approaches and solutions and promote the development of new technologies.
OAR furnishes technical assistance to states and agencies that have radiation protection programs, and administers a national surveillance inspection program for measuring radiation levels in the environment. The Office also conducts comprehensive acid rain research, analyzes the impact of pollutants found at the workplace, and studies the effects of global change.
