All data produced by the National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) are geographically referenced. NODC maintains and stores a large, multidisciplinary marine scientific data base through activities that include acquisition, processing, storage, and retrieval of oceanographic data. It manages and operates The World Data Center-A (WDC-A) for Oceanography. The principal types of data exchanged by the WDC-A are serial oceanographic station data, bathythermograph, current, biological, and sea surface observations. NODC archives and disseminates the U.S. Navy Geodetic Satellite (GEOSAT) data. GEOSAT provided the first long-term global observations of sea level, wind speed, wave height, and ice topography.
A component of NODC is the Ocean Pollution Data and Information Network (OPDIN). OPDIN provides access to the ocean pollution data and information produced by 11 participating Federal departments and agencies.
Another component of NODC is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Library and Information Network (NLIN). It includes a million-volume research collection with a comprehensive coverage of:
- hydrographic surveying (1820 to present);
- oceanography, meteorology, and hydrology (1870 to present);
- living marine resources (1870 to present); and
- meteorological satellite applications (1960 to present).
NLIN supplies computer-based information retrieval from over 500 data bases. Most of these can be accessed by dial-up systems such as DIALOG, BRS, NEWSNET, WESTLAW, and OCLC. An increasing number of data bases are available on CD-ROM.
