Abstract:

Maps and reports containing geologic, geophysical, and geochemical data obtained under the Department of Energy's National Uranium Resource (NURE) Program from 1974 to 1980. The data were transferred to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in 1984. Type of NURE data available from USGS are: Geologic maps, aerial radiometric data, aeromagnetic data, data from hydrological and stream-sediment sample analyses, geochemical data from rock sample analyses, radiometric data from borehole logging, and evaluation data for uranium resource estimates.

NURE data are organized and retrievable by reference to a rectangular grid system that corresponds to the National Topographic Map Series 1:250,000-scale quadrangle system used by the USGS. In this system, a total of 621 quadrangles cover the conterminous United States and Alaska: 468 for the conterminous States and 153 for Alaska. However, not all categories of Nure data are available for all quadrangles.

Seven major type of NURE data are available from the USGS. These are:

Geologic maps. The NURE program produced 421 geologic quadrangle maps at a scale of 1:250,000 of which 288 are available.

Aerial radiometric data. These data, which indicate the presence of potassium, uranium, and thorium, are available for 540 quadrangles.

Aeromagnetic data. These data, acquired using a magnetometer with a sensitivity of 1/4 gamma, are available for the same 540 quadrangles as the aerial radiometric data.

Data from hydrogeochemical and stream-sediment sample analyses. These data are from more than 300,000 samples of ground, lake, and stream water and more than 700,000 samples of lake and stream sediments that were analyzed for chemical composition by a variety of techniques. The data consist of chemical analyses for as many as 47 elements of 1,500 to 2,000 samples per quadrangle. Data are available for 310 quadrangles in the conterminous States and 104 quadrangles in Alaska.

Geochemical data from rock sample analyses. These data consist of more than 250,000 whole-rock and trace- and minor-element analyses, gamma-spectroscopy analyses, and thin-section analyses performed on nearly 50,000 rock samples from 158 quadrangles.

Radiometric data from borehole logging. These data include resistivity, natural-gamma, spectral-gamma (KUT), neutron-neutron, caliper, magnetic-susceptibility, temperature, and vertical-deviation log data obtained from more than 435,000 feet of log from about 700 drill holes in the conterminous States. In addition, non-proprietary log data for 848 industry boreholes totaling another 2.3 million feet are included to produce a data base of more than 1,550 holes.

Evaluation data for uranium resource estimates. These data are presented for 162 quadrangles.
