Technology Description:

Thermal Desorption System: Use of two-stage process to remove a wide variety of contaminants from soils, sediments, and sludges. System components consist of rotary kiln, soil discharge/dust suppression system, cyclone, baghouse, ID fan, afterburner, quench tower, and stack. The full scale system occupies a footprint of 100 feet by 150 feet and remediates soils at throughputs ranging from 10 to 100 tons per hour.

In the rotary kiln, heat volatilizes contaminants from the soils at temperatures ranging from 600 to 1000 degrees Fahrenheit. The volatilized contaminants are then destroyed in a high efficiency afterburner. Off-gases are cooled and filtered prior to discharge. Clean soils can be re-used as backfill.

The system is highly flexible; time, temperature, and turbulence in the primary chamber can be varied to suit different waste stream requirements. Additional downstream pollution control devices can also be configured. The system is suitable for a wide range of feed characteristics, from dry gravel to high moisture tars to clays.

          Marketable features:

High throughput drives low cost per ton. Wide operating envelope treats a wide variety of contaminants. Flexible layout allows customization and/or addition of site specific pollution control, such as condensers and scrubbers.

          Mobile design
The unit can be assembled on site within 2 months. The feed system can accept tars, clays, and high moisture (30 percent) soils.
Performance Status/
Limitations:

Performance Status:

The system has processed over 285,000 tons of petroleum contaminated soils, many with heavy clays and high moisture content.

The system also processed approximately 12,600 tons of VOC contaminated soils at a Superfund site in Fulton, New York.

          Limitations:

The system can be limited by the Btu value of the feed. Additionally, certain contaminants limit throughput if scrubbing technology is not employed.
