These vegetation index tapes are part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Polar Operational Environmental Satellite (POES) Series Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and include weekly polar stereographic and Mercator arrays. They contain composites of the data needed for the vegetation index mapped to polar stereographic, Mercator, and Plate Carr projections at about 20-km resolution.
The vegetation index tapes contain composites of the normalized vegetation index, AVHRR channels 1, 2, 4, and 5, solar zenith angles, and scan angles. These data are mapped to polar stereographic, Mercator, and Plate Carr projections with a resolution of about 20 km. The Plate Carr maps data from only 75øN to 55øS; consequently the polar stereographic projection, which uses data from the Plate Carr, will have holes at the poles. The polar stereographic projection has a higher resolution than the Plate Carr projection (13 km compared to 16 km). The Mercator projection has a resolution of 19.5 km.
