A growing number of near-real time ocean data products are provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal Program's CoastWatch and are stored at the National Oceanographic Data Center. Much of this data will be available for on-line access. These products include: Sea surface temperature (SST) products derived from the NOAA Television and Infrared Operational Satellite (TIROS) polar orbiter's Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR); Channel 1, 2, and solar zenith angle data (for determining reflectance); and data from the moored U.S. coastal and Great Lakes' meteorological buoys.
The NOAA TIROS Polar Orbiter's AVHRR data are being used to produce SST products. The SST products are being produced by taking AVHRR brightness data and converting it to SST data using algorithms. Image products have resolutions of 1 and 4 kilometers, and the SST data are presented to the user in compressed binary format. After being decompressed, the headers will be in ASCII. The user can produce turbidity products by applying an algorithm to the reflectance.
