Abstract:

These vegetation index tapes are part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Polar Operational Environmental Satellite (POES) Series Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data. They contain information regarding the amount of vegetation which the AVHRR instrument can discern.

The vegetation index is a measure of the spectral reflectance of the chlorophyll pigment in visible and near infrared part of the spectrum. The index measures the density and vigor of green vegetation. There is a daily version which is composed of three files (Documentation, Channel 2, and Scaled Vegetation Index). The weekly version contains five files (Documentation, Mapped Channel 2, Scaled Simple Vegetation Index, Scaled Normalized Vegetation Index, and Mapped Channel 1). The data have been reduced from 10 bit precision to 8-bit precision. It has been mapped using the 8-bit data, and has a range of 0 to 255.
