Abstract:

The Commander, Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command, and the Superintendent, U.S. Naval Observatory, are responsible for the science, technology, engineering, and operations that are essential to explore the ocean and atmosphere to improve naval operations. The Naval Oceanographic Program embraces five major disciplines of physical science:

Hydrography - Data collection for the charting of the oceans and to establish geodedic references for navigation.

Oceanography - Defining the characteristics of the water volume for use in ocean reporting and prediction, and studies of underwater acoustics, water dynamics, and corrosion.

Meteorology - Defining the characteristics of the atmosphere for use in weather reporting and prediction.

Astrometry - Determining the positions and motions of celestial bodies required for accurate navigation.

Precise Time - Determining, providing, and managing the distribution of precise time for use in electronic navigation and command, control, and communications.
