Abstract:

Digital sidescan sonar images of the sea floor are available for the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) around the 30 coastal States. The images show sea-floor morphology and geologic processes which have occurred seaward of the continental shelf.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) is using a Geophysical Long Range ASDIC (GLORIA) sidescan sonar system to obtain a plan view of the sea floor of the EEZ. GLORIA imagery is acquired by transmitting a 6.5-KHz sound pulse into the ocean toward the sea floor at an oblique angle. The reflected sound wave strength provides information on the inclination of the sea floor, surface roughness, and acoustic impedance of the sea floor. The picture element (pixel) resolution is approximately 50 meters. The data are digitally mosaicked into image maps which are at a scale of 1:500,000. These mosaics provide the equivalent of "aerial photographs" that reveal many physiographic and geologic features of the sea floor.

The results of GLORIA surveys are compiled as Atlases that are published as Miscellaneous Investigations Series Maps (I Series). As of May 1992, four Atlases are available: Western Conterminous United States (I-1792); Gulf of Mexico and Eastern Caribbean Areas (I-1864A,B); Bering Sea (I-2053); and Atlantic Continental Margin (I-2054). The GLORIA Atlases are also available in digital format on CD-ROM.
