Abstract:

The Factor Information REtrieval (FIRE) Data System is a database management system containing EPA's recommended emission estimation factors for criteria and hazardous air pollutants. FIRE includes information about industries and their emitting processes, the chemicals emitted, and the emission factors themselves. FIRE allows easy access to criteria air pollutant emission factors obtained from the Compilation Of Air Pollutant Emission Factors (AP-42), hazardous air pollutant emission factors derived from source tests, and XATEF, the Crosswalk/Air Toxic Emission Factor data base system.

The emission factor data in the FIRE data base management system are organized in modules. The two main modules of data distributed with the FIRE system consist of EPA recommended emission factors -- one module for criteria pollutants and one module for toxic and hazardous air pollutants. Users may create their own modules of data to compliment the two modules already available in the FIRE system. FIRE Version 5.1b allows users to browse through records in the data base or select specific emission factors. An important feature of FIRE is the user's ability to enter emission factors into the system and to submit data to EPA for evaluation and inclusion in the FIRE repository system. Submitted data will be evaluated by EPA toward revising rated factors in the distribution system.

          How To Access The Data

The latest version of the FIRE software is available for downloading at no charge through the Technology Transfer Network (TTN) World Wide Web site, operated by the Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards. The FIRE database is designed for use by local, state, and federal agencies, environmental consultants, and others who require emission factor information for estimating both criteria and toxic air emissions from stationary and mobile sources. The FIRE program requires an IBM-compatible PC with a minimum of 520 KB of random-access memory and 15 MB of available hard disk space.
