On February 5, 1993, the US Army Toxic and Hazardous Materials Agency was re-designated as the US Army Environmental Center (USAEC), under the direction and guidance of the Director of Environmental Programs. The USAEC is responsible for spearheading the Army's environmental restoration program. The USAEC's original environmental mandate - the restoration of active Army installations - today extends beyond installation restoration to include environmental compliance support and more, such as environmental technology demonstration and transfer.
The center works hand-in-hand with the environmental staffs of the Army's major commands, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' divisions and districts, field operating activities, installations, and facilities nationwide and around the world. USAEC's support encompasses the four pillars of the Army's environmental strategy - Compliance, Restoration, Prevention, and Conservation. This environmental support takes many forms, such as conducting site investigations, testing ground water, reviewing Army environmental requirements, and implementing new sampling technologies.
The USAEC is divided into four regional offices:
Central Regional Environmental Office (EPA Regions 6 and 7) - Kansas City, Missouri
Northern Regional Environmental Office (EPA Regions 1, 2, 3 and 5) - Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland
Southern Regional Environmental Office (EPA Region 4) - Atlanta, Georgia
Western Regional Environmental Office (EPA Regions 8, 9, and 10) - Commerce City, Colorado
