Abstract:

The Hazardous Substance Research Centers (HSRC), a national organization that carries out an active program of basic and applied research, technology transfer, and training. Our activities are conducted regionally by five multi-university centers, which focus on different aspects of hazardous substance management. These centers bring together researchers from a variety of disciplines to collaborate on integrated research projects, which involve practical problems of hazardous substance management as well as long-term, exploratory research.

The Hazardous Substance Research Centers (HSRC) addresses one of the nation's most important environmental issues: management of hazardous substances from manufacture to treatment and disposal.

Conventional methods of determining, remediating, and managing these problems have proven inadequate to achieve desired levels of clean-up. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency established HSRC Program to develop better, cheaper, faster, and safer methods to assess and clean these sites.

The HSRC consists of five regional centers, each created through a competitive award process to provide:
        • Short- and long-term research on the manufacture, disposal, clean-up and management of hazardous substances
        • Dissemination of research information and findings
        • Training, technology transfer, and technical outreach and support to benefit organizations, communities, and individuals involved with hazardous substances.
Research supported by the HSRCs covers most relevant scientific and technological subjects. Each HSRC is headed by a director responsible for the intellectual guidance of the consortium as well as for its daily operations. A technology transfer and training director oversees training and commercial application of center projects. Each of the five HSRCs serves the states within two adjoining Federal regions. All five centers collaborate to form the National Hazardous Substance Research Centers Program. Each center has its own science advisory committee and technology transfer and training advisory committee that regularly review the progress of ongoing work and recommend funding of new proposals.
