Open-file reports include manuscript reports, maps, and other material that are made available for public consultation and use. Many open-file reports include, or consist of, geologic, geophysical, or geochemical maps.
The Open-File Series is designed for immediate release of basic data, preliminary reports, and a wide range of documents that may or may not meet criteria for publication in other USGS report series or in outside journals. The subject matter of open-file reports spans almost the entire range of earth science investigations conducted by the USGS, including bedrock and surficial geology, stratigraphy, paleontology, geophysics, geochemistry, mineral and energy resources, geologic hazards, and water resources. Geologic maps in the Open-File Series are either preliminary versions of maps intended for later publication, or final products release for immediate use by the public. Although open-file reports and maps have undergone technical review for scientific content, most have not been reviewed for conformity with USGS editorial standard or stratigraphic nomenclature.
