Technology Description:

STI produces innovative field sampling tools. The SimulProbe collects soil, soil gas, and groundwater. With one tool and one trip down the hole you can obtain 2 correlated samples-soil and soil gas, or soil and groundwater. The samples are collected from the same stratigraphic horizon as the collected core, and come from the area surrounding the core sample and not from the core itself.

          SimulProbe tools are adaptable to virtually any drilling technology: direct push, CPT, cased hole, mud rotary. The SimulProbe comes in three models:
          - Maxi-SimulProbe for cased hole applications - 3.38 in. OD, 2.5 in. ID's
          - Mini-SimulProbe for direct push, CPT, cased hole, and mud rotary applications - 2 in. OD, 1.25 in. ID
          - SimulProbe Core Barrel (soil only split spoon) - 2 in. OD, 1.25 in. ID

Limitations:

Limitations:

          The SimulProbe tools have limitations of any spit spoon soil sampler: refusal in gravels and consolidated materials; difficulty in disassembling if over packed.

          Soil gas and groundwater limitations:

          1. Clays and fine grained materials can result in very slow collection times.
          2. As of 1996, the SimulProbe does not yet have first water capabilities-it is a below first water tool.
