Technology Description:

The Turner Designs TD-4100 Continuous On-line Monitor detects and measures BTEX, fuel oil, gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, lubricating oils, aromatic solvents and other aromatic based hydrocarbons in water. The TD-4100 is suited for ppb to ppm detection of hydrocarbons in wastewater, stormwater, potable water, groundwater, produced water, heat exchanger water or condensate, and bilge water. Recognized for its non-fouling non-contact flow cell, the TD-4100 consistently demonstrates reliable performance with low operation and maintenance costs. Continuous un-interrupted remote access monitoring for continuous discharge, treatment verification, process control or leak detection saves time, money and can eliminate grab sampling programs. The monitor supports regulated discharge permits and correlates to standard laboratory methods for Oil & Grease and TPH.

The monitor is designed to overcome the problems that are commonly encountered in continuous field monitoring applications. The significant design elements of the TD4100 include:

          · Direct measurement of dissolved aromatic hydrocarbons does not require sample pre-treatment or extraction prior to sample detection. The TD 4100 does not require the addition of chemicals to monitor hydrocarbons in water.

          · Continuous monitoring allows the instrument to take uninterrupted, real time, measurements of targeted hydrocarbons in contaminated water.

          · A non-contact, non-fouling flow cell virtually eliminates the need for routine cleaning or maintenance to sustain instrument performance.

          · On-line process control allows real time data generated by the monitor to activate alarms, emergency telecommunications or automatically modify pollution control or water treatment systems.
Performance Status/
Limitations:

Performance Status:

The TD-4100 has demonstrated performance for applications that include:

          1. Stormwater Monitoring

          2. Heat Exchanger Leak Detection

          3. Industrial Wastewater Discharge

          4. NPDES Discharge Compliance Monitoring

          5. Municipal Water Intact Monitoring

          6. Process Water Monitoring

          7. Produced Water Discharge Compliance

The TD-4100 demonstrates aromatic petroleum hydrocarbon detection and measurement utilizing both direct calibration and secondary method correlation. The TD-4100 has demonstrated correlation to O&G Method 413.1, Freon IR Method 413.2, TPH by GC and Method 8020..

          Limitations:

The detection limits for aromatic hydrocarbons in water are influenced by the complexity of the contaminated water. Complexity refers to the elements of turbidity, suspended solids, competing interferences and concentration of the targeted hydrocarbon in the water sample stream. Table 1 illustrates the detection limits for a series of hydrocarbons in various types of water ranging from clean filtered water to highly contaminated industrial wastewater. The detection limits for the targeted hydrocarbon in the respective water source will change depending on the complexity of the water sample. For instance, the detection limits for BTEX may be lower in a less complex industrial wastewater stream.

          TABLE 1
          Diesel:
Clean Water - 1 ppb, Contaminated Water - 40 ppb

          Gasoline:
Clean Water - 1 ppb, Contaminated Water - 50 ppb

          Crude Oil:
Clean Water - 10 ppb, Contaminated Water - 50 ppb

Compared to UV and IR absorption based monitors or instruments, the TD4100 is inherently more resistant to interferences. Interferences must have one of two characteristics before the TD4100’s selectivity, sensitivity or specificity for hydrocarbon measurement is diminished:

          1. If an interference in the water simulates or approximates the fluorescent fingerprint or mixed signature of the targeted aromatic hydrocarbons, the interference will be detected. If the interference is present at a constant or low concentration, then the TD4100 can blank or 'zero-out' the signal, making it possible to detect the targeted hydrocarbons. If the interference continuously fluctuates in concentration, then it may be difficult to properly monitor the targeted hydrocarbons at low concentrations.

          2. Contaminated water that contains very high changes in turbidity or suspended solids may prevent accurate measurement of aromatic hydrocarbons, even with the TD4100. Although fluorescent principles utilized by the TD4100 will allow it to outperform UV or IR absorption techniques for hydrocarbon detection, successful hydrocarbon detection in turbid water may require more extensive evaluation of the water sample.
