Abstract:

Mostly black-and-white maps on topographic or planimetric bases; quadrangle or irregular areas; various scales. Pre-1971 maps show bedrock geology in relation to specific mining or mineral-deposit problems; later maps are preliminary black-and-white maps on various subjects such as environmental studies, wilderness mineral investigations, and regional geology.

The MF Series contains a varied assortment of topical material that covers nearly all aspects of USGS investigations and research, including bedrock and surficial geology, offshore geology, mineral resource assessments, and geophysical and geochemical surveys. The purpose of the MF Series is to provide a means for rapidly publishing either the preliminary results of ongoing studies or the final results of studies that lack the scope necessary to qualify them for treatment as Geological Quadrangle Series maps (GQ Series) or Miscellaneous Investigations Series maps (I Series). The MF Series commonly serves as a means of publishing maps and other data in response to the mandated deadlines of specialized major programs such as the Forest Service Wilderness Studies and the Alaska and Conterminous United States Mineral Assessment Program. MF-Series maps are produced from camera-ready, hand-drafted or computer-drafted copy provided by the author, and almost all of them are printed in black-and-white.
