Technology Description:

The SVVS Remediation Technology, developed by Billings & Associates, Inc., is now in operation at 30 sites, including a SITE program site in Buchanan, Michigan. The technology is in situ, and requires electrical power. The system operates by a combination of remediation stress applied to the subsurface. Each component is described below:

          a) Air injection below the water table, using positive pressure.

          b) Vapor withdrawal above the water table, within the soil column, using negative pressure to remove volatiles.

          c) Stimulation of the microbial community to increase bioremediation of less volatile compounds.

The system is valved and operated to allow a continual adjustment and modification of remedial stress to place stress where it is most needed on the site. Series, or lines of wells, called reactor nests, are placed across the site and plumbed back to the vapor control unit, where pumps and control valves/gauges are located. If required, biological treatment
is used to reduce total volatile organic compounds. To date the system has been applied on chlorinated hydrocarbons and the BTEX components of gasoline and diesel. The system can be installed rapidly and with minimum disruption of business. Performance is measured by monitoring water quality, soil samples, stack and line measurements including flow, organic vapor meter, carbon dioxide and temperature. Microbial populations are monitored to give an indication of improving biological remediation as is dissolved oxygen.

(This technology is also listed under Bioremediation - In Situ Soil and Dual-Phase Extraction.)

Air emissions can be held within permitted levels by manipulation of flows and the use of a biological filter. The technology is effective at treating directly and aiding the biological remediation of gasoline, diesel and related hydrocarbons. At present, it is being tested at a site containing chlorinated hydrocarbons.
Performance Status/
Limitations:

Performance Status:

The SVVS is a proven technology for the remediation of UST sites. The technology was sought out by the EPA, including visits by EPA personnel to active sites, to place the technology within the SITE program. This has been accomplished. The technology has been accepted by the UST programs of five states to date, and has been proposed in several others. The technology has spawned a variety of "copycat" technologies, largely as a result of its' effectiveness and reliability.

          Limitations:

Concentrations of inorganics; in particular iron, has not been noted as a problem at current sites. Biofouling has not been significant either. On some sites, wells are periodically redeveloped by blowing air through the wells. This reduces the amounts of "fines" that may accumulate. Occasionally, multiple level vacuum reactor nests may be required in areas of very shallow water tables, or in areas subject to extreme water table fluctuations.
