Abstract:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is a part of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The mission of the CDC is to promote health and quality of life by preventing and controlling disease, injury, and disability. The CDC is comprised of 11 Centers, Institute, and Offices, including:

          The National Center for Health Statistics,
          The National Center for Infectious Diseases,
          The National Center for Environmental Health, and
          The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

          The mission of the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) is to provide national leadership, through science and service, to promote health and quality of life by preventing and controlling disease, birth defects, disability, and death resulting from interactions between people and their environment.

          The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is responsible for conducting research and making recommendations for the prevention of work-related illness and injuries. The Institute's responsibilities include the following:

          Investigating potentially hazardous working conditions as requested by employers or employees,
          Evaluating hazards in the workplace, ranging from chemicals to machinery,
          Creating and disseminating methods for preventing disease, injury, and disability, and
          Conducting research and providing scientifically valid recommendations for protecting workers.
