Abstract:

EPA’s Office of Pollution, Prevention, and Toxics (OPPT) is part of the U.S. EPA Office of Prevention, Pesticides, and Toxic Substances (OPPTS). The mission of the Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics (OPPT) is:

To protect and improve human health and the environment, to achieve risk reduction, sustainability, environmental justice, and enhance the quality of life.

To promote safer designs and wiser use of materials, products, processes, practices, technologies, and disposal methods, using pollution prevention as the principle of first choice.

To provide information, education and technical assistance to empower the public to make informed decisions on the risks associated with toxic substances.

OPPT implements the following United States environmental laws:

Asbestos Hazardous Emergency Response Act (AHERA)
Asbestos School Hazard Abatement Act (ASHAA)
Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA)
          Pollution Prevention Act (PPA)
          Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA)

OPPT manages and promotes programs and initiatives in a number of areas, including: Asbestos, Biotechnology, Chemical Testing and Information Gathering, Consumer Labeling Initiative (CLI), Endocrine Disruptors, Environmental Justice Through Pollution Prevention Grants Program, Lead Programs, Pollution Prevention, Screening Information Data Sets (SIDS), Toxics Release Inventory (TRI), and U.S. National Profile on Management of Chemicals.

The Pollution Prevention Division of OPPT provides pollution prevention technical assistance, including the Pollution Prevention Directory which contains information about publicly sponsored pollution prevention sources available across the United States. Pollution Prevention News is a 12-page newsletter put out every two months by the Pollution Prevention Division which and features activities forwarding pollution prevention. A useful, ongoing source of information is the Pollution Prevention Information Clearinghouse (PPIC). The Clearinghouse is primarily a distribution center for EPA documents and fact sheets dealing with source reduction and pollution prevention.
