VITRIFICATION

          The technology can be applied for both in situ and ex situ treatment.

          The ex situ treatment can be batch, semicontinuous or continuous; most of our data is based on a batch process due to the size limitations. The unique feature of the process is the addition of fluxing material to achieve vitrification at a relatively low temperature. This low temperature is possible since the fluxing material behaves like an impure substance which lowers the melting point. Vitrification equipment available on the market will be used.

          1. The process covers a wide range of applications and complex arrays of hazardous materials. Sites similar to those at DOD sites can be treated.

          2. Volatiles are collected and recovered separately.

          3. The low vitrification temperature saves considerable energy, time, and equipment expenditure.

          The new concept is to achieve vitrification (glassy state) at a lower temperature.

Limitations:

Limitations:

          The in situ process cannot be applied to treat soil underneath existing facilities (i.e. access is required). Additionally, it is not the most economical process as far as the initial feasibility studies are concerned.
