Technology Description:

Columbus Instruments developed an O2/CO2/CH4 respirometer which is used for measuring respiration (gas exchanges) in soil samples. It can also be used for measuring respiration of waste waters and composts or for measuring biodegradation of pollutants. Sensitivity of the respirometer is 0.2 microliters per hour (uL/hour). It can operate 1 to 80 chambers (reactors) sizes from 50 microliters (ml) to 10 liters (L). For CO2 and CH4 detections infrared gas analyzers are used; for measuring O2, a choice of electrochemical or paramagnetic O2 sensors are available.

The O2/CO2/CH4 respirometer is basically a laboratory instrument (table top) which can be transportable. An IBM-PC compatible computer is used as a system controller and data collection device. A menu-driven program allows the user to enter the experiment parameters and automatically run the experiment. Results are periodically printed and presented in graphical form on the computer monitor. Applications range from testing bioactivity of soil and water and efficiency of bioremediation processes (modeling) before or during field application.

Limitations:

Performance Status:

Columbus Instruments' O2/CO2/CH4 Respirometer was successfully used by a few EPA laboratories to test bioremediation processes in soil and water contaminated by air. One of the labs is the EPA lab in Gulf Breeze, Florida. Columbus Instruments' O2/CO2/CH4 Respirometer also was on site in Alaska in conjunction with environmental studies for the Valdez oil spill. More than 100 units have been sold to both U.S. and foreign environmental laboratories.

          Limitations:

At this time, O2/CO2/CH4 Respirometer requires a minimum of 6 minutes for measurement of each sample. Therefore, when using a 10 chamber system, results from all 10 chambers are available every hour. Operation of the Columbus Instruments Respirometer requires a trained technician.
