Abstract:

The Environmental Measurements Laboratory (EML) is a government owned and operated laboratory, under the Office of Environmental Management (EM) in the U.S. Department of Energy. EML conducts scientific and technical investigations related to environmental surveillance and monitoring, site and facility characterization, decontamination and decommissioning. EML provides DOE and other federal agencies with a responsive and objective technical capability to assure sampling, measurement and analysis quality, and to assess risk of human exposure to radioactivity and other energy-related pollutants. EML's major program areas include:

          Environmental Radiation and Radioactivity
          Metrology and Quality Assurance
          Environmental Management Technology Support
          Risk Assessment Technology
Measurements and Characterization of Environmental Aerosols, Radon and Radon Progeny
Laboratory and Field Performance Testing and Training in Environmental Radiation Measurements
Radiological Survey Support to Field Sites
          Non-Proliferation and National Security Issues
Activities in Support of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty

EML provides access to comprehensive computer databases of all published data and archived samples from its current and historic environmental programs. EML also operates and provides access to the Department of Energy's Human Subjects Research Database. Users can search and retrieve information from databases at the EML web site, including:

DOE Human Subjects Research Database - available for Fiscal Year 1994 - 1996.
Sampling and Measurement Inventory - includes database of stratospheric trace gases collected during Project AIRSTREAM, contains information on more than 1000 samples. Available on-line through DOE's Carbon Dioxide
          Information Analysis Center (CDIAC).
Atmospheric Radon Measurements at Mauna Loa and Bermuda - provide data used to determine air mass provenance.
