Technology Description:

WESTEC's ELDS is a patented and economical remote sensing system which uses proven geophysical technology to locate and quantify changes in soil moisture conditions covered by fluid leakages. The technology is ideally suited for tank farm retrofits, sanitary landfills, hazardous waste facilities, mining heap leach pads, and other impoundments where quick detection of leaks can avoid significant environmental contamination. ELDS identifies leaks or plumes in either two or three dimensions using an electronic sensor array which is installed below the primary containment liner.

Leaks as small as 50 gallons have been detected with the electronic sensors spaced on 100-foot centers making ELDS the ideal solution for both large and small scale applications. The precise location of a leak or plume and an estimate of the total volume of the release is reported as a result of ELDS testing. Remediation costs are reduced significantly when these leaks are detected and isolated early, before a breach in a secondary contaminant system occurs or is identified downgradient in a compliance point monitoring well.
Performance Status/
Limitations:

Performance Status:

ELDS was first installed in 1987 and since then has been installed in over 20-million square feet of containment facilities. The ELDS has been installed in 10 facilities throughout the Western United States. The installed systems have been used to locate and repair liners on several occasions.

Limitations:

Requires subsurface soil preparation. To ensure that the system provides adequate response, for existing potential applications ELDS would require some subsurface preparation and excavation.
