Overview of State Regulations
New Mexico has adopted Federal EPA regulations for asbestos. The state is NESHAP-delegated by the EPA Region 6. State training courses are not EPA approved.
State/Federal Agencies Involved with the State Asbestos Program
The following agencies/entities have asbestos-related regulatory and enforcement responsibilities in New Mexico:
A. The Air Quality Bureau (contact phone (505) 827-1511, Asbestos Hotline (800) 224-7009) is involved in the following state/federal asbestos enforcement/requirements:
- licensing
- pre-abatement notifications/approvals
- NESHAP/demolition/renovation/wet/tag/bag/bury
- site audit/inspections.
B. The Construction Industries Division (contact phone (505) 827-7043 , general phone (505) 827-7030) is involved in the following state/federal asbestos enforcement/requirements:
- certifications
- permits.
C. The New Mexico Occupation Health and Safety Bureau, (State OSHA) (general phone (505) 827-4230) is involved in the following state/federal asbestos enforcement/requirements:
- OSHA/worker safety/medical surveillance
- site audit/inspections.
D. The New Mexico Environment Department, Solid Waste Bureau (contact phone (505) 827-2952, general phone (505) 827-0197) is involved in the following state/federal (S/F) asbestos enforcement/requirements:
