CHEMICAL TREATMENT - OXIDATION/REDUCTION
          The technology is targeted for battery waste sites. Whole batteries or broken parts are sent to an off-site facility in most cases. The batteries or the broken parts of batteries will be treated mechanically to separate the lead, plastic, and battery paste. Whole batteries will require precrushing, followed typically by gravity washers/separators. After the removal of batteries, the site will be left contaminated mostly with acids. The soil is treated in situ by neutralization using alkali (lime, ammonia, etc). Equipment designed for soil conditioning and fertilizer injection will be utilized.

          1) The technology is cost effective.

          2) No harmful byproducts.

          3) Potential profits from the recovered wastes (lead and plastic) can be recycled and sold.

          4) The process depends on utilization of existing equipment in the market place.

Performance Status:

          EM&C has experience in soil conditioning utilizing gypsum, lime and ammonia at battery recycling plants.

          Limitations:

          The technology is limited to wastes existing on waste battery sites (contaminants are lead, battery paste, plastic and acid) or similar situations.
