Abstract:

Maps in which information on special subjects is geographically displayed on planimetric base maps or overlays registered to planimetric or topographic base maps. This category is divided into land use/ land cover and associated maps, and National Atlas maps. Land use refers to human uses of land (for example, housing and industry). Land cover describes the vegetation, water, natural surface, and manmade structures on the land surface. The National Atlas maps are separate sheets of selected thematic maps from the "National Atlas of the United States of America."

Data portrayed on thematic maps includes land use and land cover, sociocultural, economic, administrative, and historical information.

Land use, land cover, and associated maps are printed at 1:250,000 scale (1:100,000 scale in some areas). They cover categories including: built-up land, agricultural land, range land, forest land, water, wetland, barren land, tundra and snow or ice. Standard base map features include boundaries, cities, and towns, railroads, roads and highways, rivers and lakes, but no contours.

National Atlas maps are printed at scales of 1:7.5 million to 1:34 million and portray geographic patterns of significant physical, economic, sociocultural, administrative and historical characteristics of the United States. (This series includes a set of 1:2million-scale sectional reference maps.) Many National Atlas map separate sheets are available including: tectonic features; potential natural vegetation; population distribution (urban and rural); major forest types; minimum and maximum temperature maps; territorial growth; annual sunshine, evaporation and solar radiation, and others.
