Technology Description:

Clor-N-Oil is a portable field test kit for testing transformer oil for the presence of PCBs. It is a semi-quantitative test available at 20, 50, 100, and 500 ppm levels. No instrumentation is required. All required reagents are contained in each test kit. A colorimetric end point reveals if the sample is above or below the action level.

For $7.00 per test an untrained analyst can test a transformer oil sample in less than 5 minutes and tell if the oil is regulated or not. This is the only self-contained test kit available for testing PCBs in transformer oil.

Each test kit contains two plastic test tubes which each contain two breakable glass ampules. A five mL oil sample is introduced to the first test tube and the two glass ampules are crushed. A sodium reagent reacts with any PCBs that are present and strips the chlorine atoms off the PCB molecule. The resulting chloride ions are then extracted into an aqueous solution and transferred to the second test tube where they are allowed to react with a fixed amount of mercuric nitrate. A chromophoric reagent is then introduced and a violet color develops if the sample contains PCBs below the threshold level.
Performance Status/
Limitations:

Performance Status:

Clor-N-Oil has been available since 1984 and has been used millions of times in applications around the world. It has received an EPA SW-846 draft method of 9079.

          Limitations:

Clor-N-Oil is designed for electrical insulating fluid only. It may not be appropriate for other materials. It is a semi-quantitative, go, no-go test at specific concentrations (20, 50, 100, 500 ppm). It is subject to positive interference from other chlorinated compounds.
