Palintest has developed an innovative system for analysis of water for lead and copper. The SA-1000 Scanning Analyzer is based on Differential Pulse Anodic Stripping Voltammetry. The system features a unique disposable electrode which is precalibrated. This avoids the need to condition the electrode surface, and improves precision, and removes the need for user calibration as required with conventional Anodic Stripping Voltammetry equipment.
The system is light weight, battery operated and portable and may be used on-site in the field or in the laboratory and features data processing capacity and data storage of up to 300 results for later down load to printer or computer. Each result is logged with date, time and sample reference number.
To carry out a test, a small sample of water is taken in the test tube provided and treated with a tabletted reagent to condition the water for analysis. A disposable electrode is connected to the instrument and dipped into the sample. The instrument operates automatically without further user intervention. Metals from the sample are first plated onto the electrode and then stripped from the surface in turn. As each metal is stripped the current peak height and position is measured and this is interpreted by the on board processor to give a direct read out of lead and copper as ug/l (ppb).

Performance Status:
The Scanning Analyzer SA-1000 has been compared with Graphite - Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy and found to give comparable results in terms of accuracy and precision.
Limitations:
The Scanning Analyzer can detect free and complexed copper and lead only; acid pretreatment and neutralization is required to bring particulates into solution for analysis. Detection limits are slightly higher than laboratory methods.
