Abstract:

The Mississippi Laboratory, comprised of two facilities in Mississippi, is responsible for managing the Latent Resource Program and for providing at-sea vessel support for other SEFSC programs. The Laboratory also manages the Southeastern Area Monitoring and Assessment Program (SEAMAP) that involves state and federal cooperation to collect, manage and distribute fishery independent data. Sampling at sea by research vessels is used to estimate distribution, abundance, and trends of fishery resources. SEAMAP is comprised of all southeastern states, the Gulf and Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commissions, the Gulf and South Atlantic Fishery Management Councils, and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS).

Research focuses on resource surveys of fish, endangered species, and marine mammals. The Laboratory also conducts gear research to achieve conservation objectives, improve operating efficiencies and develop new fisheries. The primary product of the Resource Surveys are to monitor year to year abundance changes at two points in the life cycle (prerecruits and spawning stocks); secondarily the surveys attempt to determine spatial and temporal distributions; conduct environmental monitoring, and take samples of specimens for stock identifications, and age/growth studies.
