Abstract:

PLANTS is a database which provides a single source of general information about the plant kingdom. PLANTS was created to replace the National List of Scientific Names (NLSPN) published by the National Resources Conservation Service - NRCS (formerly the Soil Conservation Service). PLANTS provides natural resource managers, range scientists, foresters, biologists, and others with standardized plant names, symbols, and other plant attribute information. The PLANTS data are arranged in alphabetical order to provide a user-friendly database.

The plant information within PLANTS comes from many different sources through the National Plant Data Center. The principal cooperator providing the NRCS with the taxonomic backbone and geographical data for the vascular plants of North America is the Biota of North America Program. The foundation for the PLANTS database is a list of native or naturalized vascular and nonvascular plants known to occur in the United States. PLANTS is the plant data standard for the NRCS, its cooperators, and clients.

          How To Access The Data

The data is available via the Internet or Telnet:
        • Internet - Go to the PLANTS Database Access Page at the Web site listed below. Click on the large square icon, with changing pictures, labeled "Plants National Database Query Database". The database can be queried (searched) by scientific name, common name, symbol, family, or genus.
        • Telnet - A text-based, PLANTS public database system, which includes plant data within Oracle tables, is accessible via Telnet (plants.usda.gov, then login: plants) or dial-in service (toll free number 800-633-2504 or commercial 970-282-2958).
