The Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) was designed for quantitative remote sensing of the bio-optical properties of marine waters by measuring the visible spectral signatures of the sea.
CZCS was flown on the NIMBUS-7 spacecraft. It is capable of scanning one infrared and five visible regions of the spectrum simultaneously. It is able to use the measured radiances to map chlorophyll concentration, suspended sediment distribution, and water temperatures.
