Abstract:

The Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water (OGWDW) is responsible for the EPA's water quality activities related to the Nation's ground water and drinking water. The functions of the Office include developing national programs, technical policies, and regulations relating to drinking water, water quality, and groundwater; establishing environmental and pollution source standards; and providing for the protection of aquifers. OGWDW manages a number of programs, including:

Partnership for Safe Water - The Partnership for Safe Water is a unique cooperative effort between EPA, AWWA, AMWA, NAWC and ASDWA that encourages and assists U.S. water suppliers to voluntarily enhance their water systems performance for greater control of Cryptosproidium, Giardia and other microbial contaminants.

Public Water Supply Supervision - The Public Water Supply Supervision (PWSS) program aims to ensure that public water supplies are free of contamination that may pose a human health risk.

Sole Source Aquifer Protection - This program establishes procedures to develop, implement, and assess critical aquifer protection areas under the Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments of 1986.

Source Water Protection - Source Water Protection is a community-based approach to protecting sources of drinking water from contamination.

Underground Injection Control - EPA working in partnership with state and local governments to prevent injection wells from contaminating drinking water resources.

Wellhead Protection - Designed to protect ground water sources of drinking water from all potential sources of contamination, with the focus on public water supply systems.
